Students and university staff of Tver State Medical Academy, together with their guests from Tver city and abroad celebrated the festival of Diwali on November 17, 2012. In the modern and diverse India Diwali is considered to be the celebration of a new year, however this holiday has different interpretations in different regions of the country. In the north of India it is the celebration of the day of the return of Rama after long years of wanderings. The southerners believe that Diwali is the victory day of Rama over the demon king. But no one in India would argue the fact that Diwali is the victory of good over evil, the triumph of knowledge and enlightenment.
Diwali is definitely the leading festival that unites overseas Indian diaspora living in numerous countries of the world, including Russia. This festival is celebrated annually at Tver State Medical Academy – the leading university of Russia in regards to the number of students from India.
The evening was opened by Rector of Tver State Medical Academy Prof. Mikhail N. Kalinkin who addressed his welcoming speech to the audience of more than 500 people. Representative of the Association of parents of Indian students of TverSMA greeted the participants and on behalf of the parents of the Indian students expressed gratitude to the academy for the quality of education, infrastructure and opportunities for their children to follow and observe their national traditions and customs during the time of their studies in Tver.
We thank the Indian Students Association of TverSMA for the pictures of the event.
