A PhD studentship in Biochemistry/Cell biology is available in the Department of Biochemistry, School of Natural Sciences, National University of Ireland, Galway. The candidate will join a dynamic research group within the Apoptosis cluster and the project will be supervised by Dr. Adrienne Gorman, in collaboration with Prof. Afshin Samali.

The aim of the project is to identify novel adaptor proteins that link the p75NTR receptor to pro-survival signaling pathways in breast cancer cells. The p75NTR is a member of the TNF family of receptors. Signalling through the p75NTR receptor is reported to promote survival in breast cancer cells through activation of NF-kappaB. The student will be trained in a range of biochemical and cell biology techniques, e.g., cell culture, apoptosis techniques (microscopy, caspase assays etc), signal transduction (NF-kappaB signaling), protein biochemistry (immunoprecipitation, Western blotting, mass spectrometry). This is a 3 year position funded by the UK Breast Cancer Campaign.

Have you always wanted to learn German? Or do you already speak German and would like to improve it? This could be your chance!

The University of Applied Sciences in Osnabrück and Osnabrück City Council are awarding a scholarship to one person from each of Osnabrück’s twin cities: Angers (France), Çanakkale (Turkey), Derby (UK), Haarlem (Netherlands), Twer (Russia), Hefei (China) and Vila Real (Portugal). The scholarship will enable this person to attend the 17th International Summer Language School run by the University of Applied Sciences in Osnabrück.

The 17th International Summer Language School will take place from 17 August to 14 September 2009 and comprises 90 hours of intensive German language training, offered at all levels, and with the opportunity to focus on the areas of ‘general German’, ‘business German’ or ‘technical German’.

The language course will be accompanied by a wide programme of events: In the afternoons and at weekends there will be presentations, company tours, sports and social events, as well as excursions on offer. At the end of the course there will be a four-day trip to Berlin and Potsdam. The course is aimed at students or those in employment, with or without previous knowledge of the German language (from beginners to advanced). Detailed information about the course is available from the following websites: sommersprachkurs.html (German) german_language.html (English)

The scholarship will cover the course fees as well as the costs for accommodation and health insurance. There is one scholarship available to each of the aforementioned twin cities of Osnabrück. We look forward to receiving applications from those who would like to have the opportunity to improve their German skills, whether you are a student or if you are in employment. German Research Foundation, Technical University Munich, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Moscow State University

The PhD programme funded by the German Research Foundation is administered by the Technical University Munich and Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich in close cooperation with Moscow State University. The main scientific goal is to combine computational and experimental approaches to achieve a qualitatively new level of understanding of cellular regulatory systems and their evolution, with a spezial emphasis on signaling networks. Specific areas of investigation include comparative genomics of metabolic and regulatory systems, network-based interpretation of transcriptome and proteome data, and posttranscriptional regulation mechanisms.

Scientific research at the Academy’s departments and units is carried out in many diverse areas of medical sciences.

Our principal breakthrough directions of work are in the fields of biology, chemistry, physiology, general pathology, microbiology, genetics, public health, ophthalmology, abdominal surgery, dental surgery and orthodontics.

Monographs, reference books, textbooks, training aids and collections of scientific theses that reflect all main aspects of scientific work are published by the TSMA and kept in the Academy’s library.

The Academy takes an active part in development and implementation of international, federal and regional scientific projects. The TSMA frequently hosts national and international scientific conferences.

The TSMA staff includes more than 520 professional research workers and tutors, among them - 320 PhDs with completed doctoral research and 80 PhDs with completed postdoctoral research.

The specialized Scientific Board for doctoral and роstdoctoral research reviews and awards degrees in 3 specialties: cardiology, dentistry and surgery. Annually more than 40 doctoral and роstdoctoral theses are defended in the premises o the Academy.

The Students Scientific and Research Association is an important and active unit in the Academy’s research structure. The most distinguished students who demonstrate strong and effective research potential are annually awarded with national and regional scholarships.
